چکیده

Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR) is a well-established technique for the development of microwave sensors devoted to the dielectric characterization of materials. In particular the TDR has become the standard method for measuring soil water content. Although the response of the TDR signal is strictly related to the medium moisture content, it is also affected by several others factors related to the physical and chemical composition of samples and to the characteristics of soil solution. This way, for each test-case, the investigation of specific calibration procedures, plays a crucial role. This paper is focused on the feasibility of the adoption of three calibration procedures, and on the investigation of the most representative empirical and partly deterministic TDR calibration methods for real-time moisture monitoring of sand-like materials.

Moisture content measurements through TDR: a metrological assessment for industrial applications

In this paper a metrological assessment on the accuracy provided by a Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR)based method for the estimation of moisture content of granular materials is proposed. In particular, comparative moisture content measurements are carried out through two different TDR instruments: an inexpensive portable unit and a high-performance unit. The main goals are first to assess a ro...

In situ measurement of soil moisture: a comparison of techniques

A number of automated techniques for point measurement of soil moisture content have been developed to an operational level over the past few decades. While each of those techniques have been individually evaluated by the thermogravimetric (oven drying and weighing) method, typically under laboratory conditions, there have been few studies which have made a direct comparison between the various...

CHANDLER ET AL.: FIELD CALIBRATION OF WATER CONTENT REFLECTOMETERS Field Calibration of Water Content Reflectometers

Field monitoring of volumetric soil water content (VWC) is critical for a variety of applications. Recently developed electronic soil water sensors provide a relatively inexpensive monitoring option. However, the calibration of these sensors is more sensitive to variations in soil properties than for time domain reflectometry (TDR), which is generally regarded as the best electronic means of VW...

In-Situ Measurement of Soil Permittivity at Various Depths for the Calibration and Validation of Low-Frequency SAR Soil Moisture Models by Using GPR

At radar frequencies below 2 GHz, the mismatch between the 5 to 15 cm sensing depth of classical time domain reflectometry (TDR) probe soil moisture measurements and the radar penetration depth can easily lead to unreliable in situ data. Accurate quantitative measurements of soil water contents at various depths by classical methods are cumbersome and usually highly invasive. We propose an impr...

Time-Domain Reflectometry for the Prediction of Loblolly Pine and Sweetgum Moisture Content

Time-domain reflectometry (TDR) can be used to predict the moisture content in porous materials, including soil, and is an exciting tool that could be used to measure the moisture content in wet-stored wood. Three-rod probes with 127 mmor 152 mm-long rods were inserted into 62 loblolly pine and 34 sweetgum saturated bolts. The bolts were air dried over a span of five weeks. TDR waveforms and mo...
